Canon Information

History: Bitterblue comes from a world where "gracelings" exist. Gracelings are born with a unique power that gives them an advantage in some way. They also have heterochromia iridum. Bitterblue is not a graceling.

Bitterblue is the daughter of King Leck of Monsea, and his wife, Ashen, princess of Lienid. Leck was a graceling graced with the power to make people believe and do anything he said. He used this ability to egregiously harm his kingdom for 35 years. When Bitterblue was 10, she and Ashen broke free of Leck's power and tried to escape. Ashen died in the process, but Bitterblue's cousin, Po, and his friend, Katsa, (both gracelings themselves), helped her escape to Lienid. Leck confronted them in Lienid and Katsa was able to kill him. Bitterblue then, at 10 years old, assumed the throne of Monsea.

However, her country took a long time to recover from what Leck had done to it. Her advisors, all having suffered extreme abuse under Leck, did not want the truth about their abuse to get out. They formulated a plan to undermine any attempt to find the truth, which included undermining Bitterblue's efforts to help her country recover, and her ability to even just simply rule. As an adult (age 18), and with the help of her Po and friends, she discovered what was impeding her country's efforts to heal and who was behind obstructing her reign. And it pained her both that once again people she trusted hurt her and that she would have to sit in judgment over them.

Personality: Bitterblue's first wholly positive, complete memory was the moment her father was killed and she knew with all her being that she was now the Queen of Monsea. She was ten at that time. Her heart has never changed from that moment, even at the age of 18 she is dedicated to serving the people of Monsea the way they need her to. To say the least, she is determined and driven. The people of Monsea went through hell when her father was their king, she only hopes that she can correct some of what he'd done.

To this end, Bitterblue is greatly self-sacrificing - she puts the needs of her people above her own. Even when it breaks her heart on a personal level, she knows that being a Queen comes with certain responsibilities and obligations. She struggles with seeing the progress she's making for Monsea or how well she's doing as a Queen - which is understandable, she did not have a good example in her father, and she remembers so little of her mother. And she is sometimes gripped by the fear that she'll never be strong enough. But her determination to do right for the people keeps her trying to get find it in her to be a good leader.

CR-AU: N/A

Physical description: Bitterblue is not very tall (about 5'3"), and has gray eyes and black hair. She's biracial (her mother was Lienid, her father was Monsean) and she has a bit of each of her parents in her - she inherited her mother's olive-tan skin, gray eyes, and black hair. As for what her father passed on, Bitterblue has a face she struggles to find beautiful, her features are more towards the plain end of the spectrum. This usually doesn't bother her. Despite being short, she's learned to carry herself well when she needs to, she's poured her heart and soul into being the Queen her country needs.

Earth AU

Name: Bitterblue Monsea

History: Bitterblue is the daughter of Louis Monsea, a French-American diplomat stationed in France, and Syrine Hadj, a French UN ambassador of Algerian and Tunisian heritage. Born in the US when her parents were in the country for diplomatic purposes, she was then raised primarily in Europe and Northern Africa, spending time between school semesters with her parents or one set of her grandparents. She has a sister named Hava who is 2 years younger.

For the most part, Bitterblue's life was ordinary in its extraordinariness. Her parents were statesmen after all, and they traveled all over the world with a certain level of privilege few people rarely experienced. She remembers traveling to these far away places and the amount of security provided by the government that blended into her family life. But she can't ever recall a time when that security was needed - probably due to a combination of how good that security was and her parents keeping any physical threats made against their lives quiet from their children.

Her parents expected excellence from her in her studies, but let her decide the elective subjects. While they were a diplomat and an ambassador, they didn’t expect either of their children to follow in their footsteps. They just wanted successful children, passionate about learning with a desire to succeed at whatever it is they wanted to do. And that is what they got.

From a young age, because she was required to be fluent in five different languages – French, English, Tunisian Derja, Algerian Arabic, and Berber – just to be able to speak to her extended family, Bitterblue learned quickly how to pick up languages. When she was seven, she and Hava made up their own language so they could speak to each other without their parents understanding them. (Louis and Syrine admired their children’s tenacity, though, as one can imagine, it was also trying.) By the end of her primary education she had added a few more European languages to her cache.

And because of her language abilities, Bitterblue easily caught onto both mathematics and music. All three subjects relied on a set of symbols with defined values, repeated again and again. There were patterns to languages, to mathematics, and to music. It all made sense in her head in a way that paintings and sculptures or biology and chemistry did for others.

In primary school, Bitterblue discovered first her love for mathematics, then ciphers, and finally the mathematical structure of music. Ciphers were fun to play with, especially when she taught them to Hava, giving them an even deeper level of sisterly secrecy they kept from their parents. She fell in love with the viola and poured her creative heart into learning to master this particular instrument, though she also later learned how to play several other instruments (piano, violin, and cello).

She attended the University of Cambridge specifically for mathematics, ciphers, and languages. But she also continued to study music as it pertained to mathematics and still practiced the viola. She did two semesters abroad in the US at the University of California, Berkley, for classes on cipher cryptanalysis. During the break following those semesters she interned with Interpol at their headquarters in Lyon, France.

After completing her degree, she again turned to Interpol for her first career choice as a cipher cryptanalysis. She lived in Lyon for a few years, finishing their training program. She wasn’t a “spy,” though some of her friends assumed she was because she worked for Interpol and they had a fundamental misunderstanding of what Interpol was. But her position was to analyze information systems (audio conversations, visual communications, written code, etc.) in order to study the hidden aspects of the systems.

When a similar position with better pay at the Interpol liaisons office with the UN in New York City, USA opened up, she took a chance and applied. She’d lived in California before and given how much traveling she’d done as a child following her parents and grandparents around the world, she was destined to not stay in one spot for very long.

She was more than pleased when she landed the job, and very ready to start a new adventure.

Personality: Not growing up with a cruel psychopath for a father who killed her mother and then died when she was young (her Earth AU parents are both loving and kind and want the best for her) Bitterblue’s personality deviates a bit from canon. She’s more sure of herself, isn’t prone to lying as a defensive mechanism, or fits of envy, nor does she need to find ways to reassure herself that reality is reality, all faults that plagued her as she grew up in her canon world.

Bitterblue is driven by her natural curiosity over puzzles and patterns. From a young age, she was encouraged to self-learn as much as possible, and where it would benefit her, her parents saw to it she had a first class education. Having learned to be studious from a young age, Bitterblue readily seeks out new challenges and finds ways to expand her understanding of the world. She wants the comfort of home but the ability to see as much of the world as possible.

She learned empathy and compassion at a young age, being the world traveler that she is. And her parents saw to it, that despite their comforts in life, their daughters understood the meaning of privilege and that so many people did not and still do not have access to the luxuries that she and her sister did growing up.

Bitterblue is civic minded, and she very much enjoys her job – it is challenging in all the ways she wants – but she does not see herself as a cop even though she works for a law enforcement agency. Her role is more of a behind the scenes investigator rather than the person waving a gun.

She very much wants to surround herself with as many friends as she can get. She is quite tactile, she needs human contact - hugs, holding hands, shoulder squeezes. A hug from a friend is a solid confirmation that her friend is still real - still there. Though she tends to walk that line between extrovert and introvert. She is drawn towards surrounding herself with her friends and chosen family, but prefers small, quiet gatherings rather than being the life of a ruckus party.

Physical description: Earth AU Bitterblue is essentially the same as her canon-self. Short than average height, average body size, has olive-tan skin, gray eyes, black hair. Her hair is long to about mid back and she usually keeps it done up in a single braid.
